Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive the following certifications:  2 year certification for Red Cross Lifeguard, CPR-PR, 1st Aid, and Bloodboorne Pathogens. Participants are expected to attend all class dates and times. This is a blended learning course. Part of the course will be offered and completed online prior to classtime.

Online: The online portion of the course needs to be completed before class starts on October 28. Participants will receive their log-in information for the online portion after they register.
Class Dates and Times: Friday October 28 5:30-9pm, Saturday October 29 8:30am-5:30pm, Sunday October 30 noon-8pm

Ratio: 1 teacher: 10 students
Fee: $170.00. Fee includes lifeguard manual, CPR mask and class instruction. If you work for a full year at the Le Mars Indoor Pool / Outdoor Pool you will be reimbursed for your lifeguard training fee.
Registration: Register at the Le Mars YMCA.

Course Prerequisites:

Complete the online portion of the blended learning prior to 5:30pm on March 26, the start of the class.

At least 15 years old.

300 yard continual swim using breaststroke or front crawl and rhythmic breathing

2 minute deep water tread without using arms.

Timed 20 yard swim, retrieve a 10lb item from the bottom of the pool, return to starting point and exit the pool in less than one minute and forty seconds.                 

Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

Successful completion of the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor class will result in a 2 year certification to instruct Red Cross swimming lessons. Participants are expected to attend all class dates and times.

  • At least 16 years old.
  • Swimming the following five strokes for 25 yards continually: front crawl, backstroke,
    elementary backstroke, breaststroke and side stroke
  • Swimming the butterfly for 15 yards continually
  • 2 minute deep water tread without using arms
